It’s okay to be ignorant about another country’s holidays. There’s a lot of knowledge to be gained in the world. It’s not okay to be willfully ignorant. I’m ignorant about a lot of things. The word has a certain connotation in society now, but it simply means uneducated. White male East Texan here. School district I grew up in always had a Juneteenth day celebration at school. I erroneously assumed that everyone knew about it until I married a women not from here, and was surprised I had to explain it. So I realized my original post is a little confusing. Yes, we were out of school by June. We didn’t get to celebrate Juneteenth on Juneteenth, but we had a Juneteenth day at school. Like a Christmas in July type of thing. Close. Pan Africanism refers to African descendants who were spread via the African diaspora. So black people across the globe who were dispersed from their original home (Africa). So this includes black Americans, Afro Carribean and all other African descendants whose lineage was dispersed due to slavery. It’s the idea that we are all connected by a common history.
