My partner and I deal with online sales and used to ship with old stamps all the time. Not only does it save money but your packages always look really cool. It was a nice way to set us apart from other online retailers. Belgian newspaper tried something funny a couple months ago. We have "prior stamp" which is more expensive and post will be delivered quicker. They put one a letter, and they put a banana sticker (not Chiquita) on another letter. The letter with the fake banana stamp arrived first. The codes were originally implemented to make things easier for early computers to assist national postal services. By the time ours got around to it technology had moved on. An elderly lady on my delivery route routinely tries to send a letter with a used stamp that she cuts out and tapes onto a new envelope. Sometimes she'll try to use a stamp that's not even available to the public. It's cute so I just give it back to her without reporting it. I'm not sure if she thinks 'one day it'll work' or if she just forgets how many times it hasn't.
